【Samsung Electronics Stock, August 1, 2026】News regarding Samsung Electronics relocating HBM4 production to the United States is fueling the ongoing growth in the global semiconductor investment circle. Bloomberg reported early this morning that Samsung Electronics has preliminarily engaged in discussions with the Texas state government and the Austin City Council regarding a "Advanced Packaging Production Line Upgrade Plan," planning to build a new HBM4 production line at its Taylor Site in Austin, and introduce advanced packaging processes such as MR-MUF (Mass Reflow Molded Underfill). This would be Samsung's first production of the highest-end HBM product outside of South Korea, as its HBM capacity is currently concentrated in its Cheonan and Wonyang factories.
HBM4 Becomes the Winning Hand in the AI Computing Race
As the fifth generation of high-bandwidth memory, HBM4 is considered a key component for next-generation AI accelerators GPUs. NVIDIA's next-generation Blackwell Ultra graphics card is expected to feature HBM4, with SK Hynix currently being the main supplier. With AI model parameter scales expanding into the trillions, the HBM market is growing at an astonishing rate. TrendForce data shows that HBM3E output grew by over 250% in the first half of 2026, and HBM4 is expected to enter the ramp-up phase from the end of the year, with market demand potentially exceeding $25 billion in 2027.
Why Did Samsung Choose the US?
- Customer Lock-in: Major AI companies such as NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Meta have established large-scale computing centers on the West Coast of the US. Austin, Texas is one of Samsung's closest manufacturing bases to NVIDIA headquarters, allowing for proximity supply.
- Policy Dividend and Risk Hedging: The US CHIPS and Science Act provides a 25% investment tax credit for semiconductor manufacturing, and Samsung has secured over $6.4 billion in federal subsidies. Expanding the Austin facility from "logic chips" to "storage packaging" helps meet additional conditions for subsidies while diversifying geopolitical risks.
- Talent and Ecosystem: Austin has UT Austin and a large pool of semiconductor engineers, allowing Samsung to embed advanced packaging teams directly into the US, facilitating joint development with NVIDIA and AMD.
Analyst Interpretation: Reshaping the Supply Chain, But Significant Short-Term Challenges
This news has triggered sharply contrasting reactions in the market. Analysts at Highland Semiconductor stated in their minutes that, if true, it would significantly strengthen Samsung's long-term competitiveness in the AI storage arena, but execution risks cannot be ignored. Improving yield for HBM is much more difficult than for traditional DRAM; Samsung lost to SK Hynix in the HBM3E stage due to yield issues, and replicating processes for a new facility far from Korea in the HBM4 stage will be difficult to profit from in the short term. Citi Bank believes that Samsung's more practical approach would be to complete initial mass production in Korea first, and then migrate to the US; this exposure might just be a probing negotiation.
